Mock Mojito

Blimey, these Tipple Thursdays come around quick don’t they? I suspect they will appear even quicker as we hurtle towards the end of the year. But less about that . . . I am not ready to say goodbye to 2014 yet.

I am sure I have mentioned before that I barely drink (in fact I am positive that I have). It’s not that I have something against alcohol. I do partake in the odd tipple, especially at this time of year, which is when I usually joke about how my alcohol intake quadruples over the festive season. It sounds drastic until you realise that in real life I have probably only had about 10 alcoholic drinks over the previous 11 months. I’m not kidding, it really is something like that.

Of course that fact that I have introduced this Tipple Thursday segment may change all that. Or it may not. I might get someone else to drink them.

When I am finally persuaded to climb out of my pj’s and venture beyond the front door for evening social activities I am always driving and therefore don’t drink. Whilst I have no issues with this (I like to know how I am going to get home because I am in fact an 80-year-old in disguise), what does irk me slightly is that while everyone else is sipping on brightly coloured, exciting cocktails with imaginative names, I get lumbered with the usual suspects like lime & soda, lemonade or cola. Not all that exciting. I think it’s time it changed.

So I am starting the revolution with this Mock Mojitio.

It’s deliciously refreshing and refreshingly different. If you are hosting a Crimbo party, make a pitcher full of these for your guests who are unable to drink, for whatever reason, so that they don’t feel left out. You could even go wild and throw a cocktail umbrella in there and a jazzy drink stirrer.

I guarantee they will appreciate it.

The drink that is. I’m not guaranteeing whether they will appreciate the umbrella and jazzy stirrer. It all depends on what type of person you are friends with.

If you have any great mock-tail recipes of your own, please let me know in the comments below. You never know, they may end up featured here . . .

Mock Mojito

Ingredients:

  • 6 mint leaves
  • 30ml apple juice, see notes below
  • 20ml lime juice, approx. juice of half a lime
  • 15ml elderflower cordial
  • Soda water
  • Ice cubes

Method:

  1. Tear up the mint leaves into smallish pieces and place in the bottom of a tall glass. Add the apple juice, lime juice and elderflower cordial. Using a muddler (or similar object) press down on the mint leaves to extract the juices and flavour.
  2. Add ice (either cubed or crushed) and top up with soda water. Stir to mix everything together.

Notes:

If you use a pure apple juice – as in one that is not made from concentrate – you may need to add half a teaspoon of sugar before you muddle the mint leaves in order to give the drink a little more depth. If you are using apple juice made from concentrate you won’t need to do this as it is sweeter.

  1. I’m going to need something festive to offer all the drivers who are descending on me for Christmas this year. I’m hosting the tribe, and we’ll be 12 at table. I can’t help thinking this will fit the bill for the ladies, but something more robust will be needed for the boys…. I’m thinking something with orange zest, lime, ginger, cinnamon and bitters…

    1. I agree, this is quite a girly drink.

I love the sound of the your idea for the guys – orange, cinnamon and ginger. I may have to book a plane ticket and join you!
